My Tribute to the Family Home

Updated: May 26, 2020

During these times of lockdown, I’d like to think we’re all discovering how solid our relationships are with our immediate household members. But the truth is that it’s not all peaches and cream. In fact, toxic relationships are being tested like never before and there has been an epidemic of alcoholism, domestic abuse and divorce proceedings. These times call for patience, respect and tolerance. But at the end of the day, these are just words and can’t reflect the simmering tensions that boil over during enforced isolation.

The last month has been far more challenging for my kids than for me and my wife. I suppose that’s a good sign for our relationship. My hope is that my kids will also look back on these times and see the positive. I trust many of you have learnt the importance of family – whether your family consists of siblings, partners, friends or flatmates.

“You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only, I hope someday you’ll join us… and the world will be as one”.

John Lennon

In this environment, I’d like to offer my tribute to the family home. I paint an idyllic picture that may not be attainable for all, but it’s something we can all strive to create.

The family home is a sanctuary.

A fortress of love and kindness.

A safe place where you can be yourself.

It offers a suit of armour – supersonic, bulletproof protection from the dark clouds outside.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE and more LOVE.

Where everyone’s got your back.

All victories are celebrated.

And an invisible glue binds hearts together.

A place that helps us discover that smiles are contagious.

Sometimes we may fight, but all the time we love, we care, we commit, we soften, we nurture, we connect, we laugh, we reminisce, we sing, we hug and we breathe together.

Be safe, stay home.
