The power of laughter to heal your heart & your health

Updated: Jun 23, 2020

“You inspire, you put a smile on someone's face, you make someone laugh or deeply touch a person's heart. We all have that in ourselves no matter how tough our journeys are.”

Shellie Palmer, The Journey Ahead

Thanks, Shellie, for these words. They provide a great description of why I started Keeping the Beat, to help anyone who's faced a major health event to overcome it, to touch the heart's of others after surviving a heart event of my own. I learned during my recovery the power of a positive mindset, and what better way to be positive and spread positivity than with laughter!

I've been sharing posts to try to make you laugh on my social media channels and I've put together some of my favourites here.

Nurses have great senses of humour, it helps them cope with their stressful jobs. So, I couldn't go past a nurse joke! ❤️🩺

Patient: Will I be able to play the piano after this operation?

Nurse: Sure of course!

Patient: That's great, I couldn't before!

And here's a little cardiologist humour for doctors and heart patients alike. ❤️🩺

A doctor is with a patient in hospital and presents him with a get well card. The doctor says:"I'm the doctor who brings the cards, I'm the cardiologist." 😂

There are a lot of motivational types out there that will tell you to give EVERYTHING 100%, but Bill Murrays' words couldn't be truer:

"Whatever you do, always give 100% unless you're donating blood." 🤣

Mallory Hopkins puts it well, but you can smile and laugh your entire life, it's great for the soul so don't ever stop, teeth or not.

"Life is short. Smile while you still have teeth."

Who doesn't love Dr Seuss? He wrote a lot of great, whimsical, fantastical rhymes and this one has a simple, positive message: Today was good.

Today was fun.

Tomorrow is another one.

I can never pass up a good laugh thanks to Leunig.

In this cartoon a woman is on the phone and a man sits eating a hamburger.

The woman says: "We're in isolation Beryl' I'm flattening the curve and Norm is fattening the curve."

Here's a little spin on a tried and true cliché:

Does an apple a day keep the doctor away?

Only if you aim well!

I do love a good dad joke 😆

I know that sometimes it's really hard to smile, laugh and feel positive. Just do your best, and try to remember how a good laugh can make your feel - laughter is great medicine <3
