HEART TO HEART

Your heart is pretty much your best friend.

It’s a magical pump, a humble toiler who works tirelessly every day to ensure that everything else in your body is also keeping the beat.

It pumps around 100,000 times a day and never asks for time off. And up until recently, it never even requested a sick day.

It offers unconditional love and is never judgemental. So when you don’t treat it well, there are no complaints - it just keeps on trying its hardest to do what’s best for you. But now it’s time to say thanks with some positive changes to your mindset, diet and health habits. The two of you need to work together to create a great future.

The heart has two sides, a left and a right. The right-side pumps blood to your lungs to pick up oxygen. The left side receives this oxygen-rich blood from your lungs and pumps it around your body.

You may have heard your cardiologist refer to the cardiovascular system – this is made up of the heart, the blood and the blood vessels (arteries and veins) that carry blood around the body. This cardiovascular system keeps you alive. Transporting oxygen, nutrients (from food) and hormones (created by your body) to all your thriving tissues and organs, on a cellular level. Plus, it picks up all the nasties like carbon dioxide and other wastes and sends them to the organs that are designed to eliminate them from your body.

The heart is so intrinsic to everything we do, so it’s no surprise that it plays a key role in our emotional language. It’s how we define love, hurt and passion. The heart is where our feelings live, so you’d imagine that unhealthy thoughts aren’t going to do it any favours.

Be sure to look after your number one fan.
